In spite of the commencement of rural tourism in
the form of holiday vacation in rural areas in the western
world, in recent years, rural tourism has been used
as a means of income and employment generation for the
people of the village areas without having undesirable
environmental and cultural impact on the host destination
particularly in all most of the developing countries
around the globe. Rural tourism is the extensive form
of village tourism.
Nepal, being an agricultural derdeveloping country
with great potentials for sustainable tourism development,
has followed the village (rural) tourism concept as
an effective tool for intensive and integrated community
development without negative environmental and socio-cultural
impact. The thought has been first incorporated in the
Ninth national Plan (1997-2002) of Nepal. Tara Gaon
Development Board is committed to contribute towards
alleviating poverty and improve the quality of life
of the country people through community-based tourism.
.
TGDB has also been organizing tourism awareness programme
in its study areas. The programme would encourage the
local entrepreneurs to participate in tourism and hospitality
business and protect natural environment
and culture.
The Noble Approach of TGDB
The noble approach of the TGDB is to utilize its profits
in promoting integrated and intensive multi-dimensional
community development and tourism programmes in the
rural areas so that the benefits of tourism could peculate
down to the grass roots level, and thus help in rural
poverty reduction.
Poverty reduction in Nepal has become the top priority
of the government. Accordingly, Tara Gaon Development
Board has focused on rural tourism which has paid
especial attention to community development programmes
through cultural, rural and pilgrimage tourism with
participation of the populace living in local village
communities.
